The center was founded in 1995 on the principle that "women's rights are inseparable from human rights." In 1997, it held a series of seminars for women in Karelia. Seminar topics included violence against women, the role of women in contemporary society, and strategies for lobbying local government structures for anti-discriminatory policies. The center maintains a database of women's organizations in Russia and abroad.
