Gatchina primarily focuses its work on an environmental project, the School Ecological Initiative. The goals of this project are to increase public participation in environmental issues in the Gatchina region and the creation of an independent regional system of environmental safety. The tasks of the project include: practical help to schools in the organization of ecological education; public dissemination of instructional and informational materials; creation of public consultation and resource centers in schools; development of the so-called APELL system to in-form and train local citizens in the cases of industrial and environmental emergencies; and coordination of Russian NGOs and movements with international environmental organizations. The project is carried out by teachers and schoolchildren with help of environmental specialists, organizations, institutions, and industry. The St. Petersburg Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences over-sees the project work.
