Kola Coordinative Environmental Centre, "GAIA", is an environmental non-governmental organization which was organized in 1992 in the Murmansk region. GAIA has two official departments in its structure. The first is the Central Department and is located in Murmansk. The second department is called "Apatity" and is located in one of the region's largest cities.GAIA's main goal is the education of the area's population. GAIA works with schools and companies to organize projects designed to raise awareness of environmental issues.
GAIA's areas of activity include:
- Promoting renewable energy resources and energy conservation through the Energy Informational Centre
- Inspiration, support and coordination of local environmental groups and activists in the region (including organizations such as "Right to live"and "Want to know everything". GAIA also works with summer camps, training courses, etc.)
- Organizing school projects on topics such as acid rain
- Restoration of northern ecosystems, reforestation, planting trees and shrubs in urban areas, and recultivation of barren lands
- Cooperation with the NGO environmental movement in the Barents region
GAIA's membership is made of primarily of schoolchildren from ages 14 and up.
