The center was founded in Novokuznetsk in 1994, a region of above average public health problems because of the environmental degradation during the Soviet period. War veterans and pensioners are two of the most vulnerable groups, and comprise about one-third of Novokuznetsk's population. The Kuzbass Center's activities are aimed at social and medical rehabilitation of people in these groups. It provides health services including diagnostic, curative and sanitary services. The Center also plans to assist its clients in professional training and job placement. The center is establishing a herb-processing plant and a computer-assembly venture in order to provide long-term employment opportunities for its clients. It receives financial support from its foundersthe firms West Siberian Steel Corporation and Kuznetsk-Promstroy. It would welcome any contacts with American and European PVOs which have practical experience in provision of social services.
