Ecodom was established in 1989 with the program of building energy-efficient, environmentally sound and affordable individual housing for low-income people. It seeks to combine the accumulated experiences from around the world with local technologies and traditions. Ecodom has developed a "Natural House" program, creating housing models to provide some solutions for Russia's energy and environment problems. One demonstration house has been built near Novosibirsk, and several others are under construction. The houses are single-family dwellings using renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, and closed cycles of waste treatment and purification. Ecodom works with Biointensive for Russia in Palo Alto, CA.

In 1998 Ecodom was engaged in a project "Development of energy-efficient, environmentally sound individual housing construction in Siberia" with financial support from the United Nations Center for Human Settlements (Habitat). The project will:

ECODOM, the Institute of Thermophysics, and GIPRONII with support of the UN Centre for Human Settlements (Habitat), will organize in Novosibirsk a conference on environmentally sound housing in Siberia, September 29 - October 2, 1998.
