Ecodom was established in 1989 with the program of building energy-efficient, environmentally sound and affordable individual housing for low-income people. It seeks to combine the accumulated experiences from around the world with local technologies and traditions. Ecodom has developed a "Natural House" program, creating housing models to provide some solutions for Russia's energy and environment problems. One demonstration house has been built near Novosibirsk, and several others are under construction. The houses are single-family dwellings using renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, and closed cycles of waste treatment and purification. Ecodom works with Biointensive for Russia in Palo Alto, CA.In 1998 Ecodom was engaged in a project "Development of energy-efficient, environmentally sound individual housing construction in Siberia" with financial support from the United Nations Center for Human Settlements (Habitat). The project will:
- produce a design for energy-efficient and environmentally-sound production methods and housing construction;
- establish a training program for professionals and individuals in the construction industry;
- and conduct a public education campaign on innovative and appropriate design and construction methods for reducing energy-use in housing.
ECODOM, the Institute of Thermophysics, and GIPRONII with support of the UN Centre for Human Settlements (Habitat), will organize in Novosibirsk a conference on environmentally sound housing in Siberia, September 29 - October 2, 1998.
The basic themes of the conference:
- Eco-houses and the UN Program on Sustainable Development
- Eco-villages around the world
- Energy Efficient and Solar Architecture
- Alternative Energy Sources for Environmentally Sound Housing
- Energy Efficient Technology: Water and Solid Waste Management, Biointensive Waste Utilization, Heating Systems
- Energy Efficient Minitechnology of Building Materials Production and Housing Construction
- The Economics of Energy Efficient Ecohousing
- Ecological training, education; eco-tourism as means of transfering ecological information
