The Chita branch of the Baikal Fund began work in the late 1980's on the environmental protection of the Arakhley Lakes area in the Chita region of eastern Siberia, part of the Lake Baikal watershed. In conjunction with U.S. land use specialists, and with funding from a number of U.S. foundations and USAID, the Baikal Fund established the Arakhley Lakes Wildlife Refuge. Baikal Fund has secured temporary protected status for the Arakhley Lakes Wildlife Refuge, and is working for its permanent protection and establishment of a larger Chita National Wildlife Refuge.
