Red Crescent Society in Kyrgystan

The Red Cross society of Kyrgystan was formed on October 1st 1926. Until 1991 the society was a constuent part of the Soviet Red Cross and Red Crescent Society. After the collapse of the USSR the Red Cross Society of Kyrgystan was renamed by presidential decree into the Red Crescent Society. The society has 61 committees, 293 employees and 2,930 volunteers. In November 1997 it was officially admitted as a member to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

For 70 years the society actively participated in the health care program of the Republic of Kyrgystan. During the last two years the Red Crescent completed the following projects:

• Joint project with Dutch Red Cross Society - "Home for abandoned children in Kara-Balta"
• Refugee medical center in Bishkek
• Medical and social help for the elderly, low income families, refugees, and families with many children; and
• Youth center with branches in all regions of Kyrgystan.

Currently the society is working on the following projects: medical and social help to the refugees, the handicapped and victims of armed conflicts and natural disasters, search for missing individuals and reuniting them with their families. The society works closely with the International Red Cross Committee, national Red Cross committees, the Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent, UNICEF, Counterpart, ECHO, International Mercy Corps, etc.
