Peace Research Center of Kyrgyzstan (PRCK) was established in November 1994 as a nonprofit non-governmental assotiation of teachers, researchers and community leaders to conduct research and develop materials on topics that support the democratization process in Central Asia. PRCK's main activity has been Education for Democracy program which includes training seminars and workshops on new strategies for teaching democratic values and civic education at the high school level. Such seminars included a May 1995 training in Kashka-Suu (near Bishkek) organized by the Russian NGO "Golubka" from Moscow with participants from Uzbekistan and Kazakstan; a workshop in June 1995 in Bishkek organized with the help of the Polish Foundation for Education and Democracy; and a regional conference "Democracy in Central Asia" in July 1995 on lake Issyk-Kul. In 1996 PRCK published a textbook on civic education titled "Step by Step." With the support of Eurasia Foundation, PRCK also publishes a newsletter on civic education which is intended for secondary school teachers. The other focus of PRCK activities is conflict prevention and management. A PRCK member attended a training course "Working with Conflict" at Selly Oak College, in Birmingham, UK, and two more members will complete the course in 1997. In April 1996 PRCK prepared for publication a brochure "The Ways to Ethnic and Confessional Peace."
A print version of much of the information contained in this Central Asian Third Sector Organizations section can be found in Civil Society in Central Asia (Seattle: University of Washington Press, 1999).
