The Green Movement Center was established in Zhambyl in 1989 as one of the first environmental non-governmental organizations in Kazakstan. The Center works together with Socio-Ecological Union in Moscow, U.S.-based environmental clearinghouse ISAR, Soros Foundation, Ecology Action, and Zhambyl's sister city Fresno, CA. Since 1991, Green Movement Center has been publishing an independent environmental newspaper "Oasis." In 1992, members of the Center participated in the Global Forum on Environmental Issues in Rio, Brazil.

In 1995, together with the Zhambyl's Children Art Studio and with the financial support of ISAR, the Center launched an international environmental children's art competition titled "The Planet You Leave For Us." An international jury reviewed hundreds of pictures submitted by children in Kazakstan, Russia, Ukraine, and the U.S and selected winners, who received diplomas and prizes. After the contest, the exhibition toured in Almaty, Moscow, San-Francisco, Fresno, and Washington, DC. The competition continues this year. To apply, contact Green Movement or send pictures to their address before December 30, 1996.
