The snow leopard (irbis) is one of the rarest of the world’s big cats, and it is threatened by extinction. The Snow Leopards Lovers Club was created in 1993 and has members throughout the NIS. The Club collects and dissemi-nates information about snow leopards to activists, the public and government officials. It is encouraging cooperation between the Russian Federation and Kazakstan to expand the Russian Ust-Kokinsky National Park across the border into Kazakstan in order to expand the cat’s protected habitat. It has also organized demonstrations against the snow leopard fur trade.
