Shapagat Aid Society for Disabled Children and their Mothers

The Shapagat Society was formed in 1996 by a group of mothers concerned about the future of their disabled children in the face of weakened social welfare structures and lack of government assistance. Shapagat provides medical assistance to needy families, specialized day care for disabled children, and helps mothers of disabled children to find employment. Other activities include:

• "How to Start Your Own Business," a series of courses for mothers of disabled children on how to start a business at home (1996);
• Cooperation with a local hotel to provide meals once a week for disabled orphans (1997);
• Training for 15 mothers of children with cerebral palsy on practical medical and therapeutic techniques.
