Greenwomen's mission is to "shape a new environmental consciousness within Kazak society." To this end, the agency disseminates information on the ecological situation in Kazakstan and other countries of Central Asia through the mass media.

Greenwomen was founded by a group of women journalists who helped start the first ecological newspaper in Kazakstan, Ecocourier, in 1991. Although the newspaper had only a small staff, it had a circulation of more than 20,000 readers. The government withdrew its financial support for Ecocourier in 1994.

In 1995, Greenwomen began publishing its material in leading national and local newspapers, such as Kazakstanskaya Pravda, Vecherny Almaty, Gorizont, and Industrialnaya Karaganda. It maintains a database of environmental conditions in Central Asia, global environmental problems, educational programs on environment protection, alternative sources of energy, urban environmental problems and environmentally sound technologies and innovations.

The agency cooperates with other environmental organizations, including the Nevada-Semipalatinsk movement, and Ecological Center of Karaganda. It has affiliates in Karaganda, Ust-Kamenogorsk, and Kyrgyzstan, and plans to open offices in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan in the future.

A print version of much of the information contained in this Central Asian Third Sector Organizations section can be found in Civil Society in Central Asia (Seattle: University of Washington Press, 1999).
