Green Movement was established in 1989 as one of the first environmental NGOs in Kazakstan. It publishes Oasis, an independent environmental newspaper. Members of the center participated in the Global Forum on Environmental Issues in Rio, Brazil in 1992.
In 1995, the center received ISAR funding for an international environmental children's art competition, "The Planet You Leave For Us," held in cooperation with the Dzhambyl Children's Art Studio. An international jury reviewed hundreds of pictures submitted by children from Kazakstan, Russia, Ukraine, and the U.S and awarded diplomas and prizes to winners. After the contest, the exhibition toured of children's art toured Almaty, Moscow, San-Francisco, Fresno, and Washington, DC.
A print version of much of the information contained in this Central Asian Third Sector Organizations section can be found in Civil Society in Central Asia (Seattle: University of Washington Press, 1999).
