Center in Support of Environmental Education

The center was organized in 1989 by a group of students and lecturers from Kazak State National University. Its mission is to increase the environmental awareness of citizens of all ages. The center has three main projects:

• Green Education was the center’s first project. In 1991, it organized a national competition for young environmental scientists. The competion is now a yearly event sponsored by the Center.
• GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environ-ment) is a worldwide science education program that coordinates the work of students, scientists and teachers to study and understand the global environment.
• The CASDIN (Central Asian Sustainable Development Information Network) project was developed in 1994 when the need for an NGO support organization was identified. CASDIN publishes the monthly newsletter “Sustainable Development”; is in the process of developing a database of Central Asian NGOs; provides NGOs with information on local, regional and international funding sources; announces upcoming network-ing events such as conferences and meetings; assists NGOS with proposal writing; and provides access to computer, fax, photocopying and e-mail on a limited basis. CASDIN also organizes, together with international NGOs, seminars and workshops on NGO management, fundraising and community involvement.

Staff includes five paid members, four active volunteers, and one U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer.
