The Independent Society of Human Rights in Georgia was established on December 10, 1996 as a not-for profit NGO in Tbilisi, Georgia. It was registered by the Ministry of Justice of Georgia on December 26, 1996. Certificate No 2752.

The main founders of the organization are students of International Law and International Relations Department of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. The organization's major focus so far has been on transactions directed at providing information and education to the public on human rights and related issues. These goals have been implemented by means of making free and impartial information on human rights available in disposition of all interested persons. The organization's goals are:
