This non-governmental organisation was created in 1994 on the initiative of scientists, doctors, young politicians, artists and journalists who live in the Republic of Belarus and suffered from the Chernobyl disaster. They were supported by parliamentarians of the CIS as well as politicians of European countries and Europarliament members. The main purpose of the Association is to assist in recreating natural and cultural environment and maintain the nation's gene bank. It is also involved in work on people's health and activities.

"SPHERE" activities include: actively participating in the development of electronic networks; participating in the creation of a European database on the environment; carrying out professional independent environmental analysis; taking part in ecological events both internationally and within Belarus; helping industries in Belarus to produce products that do not harm the environment; attracting the attention of the international community towards ecological problems; providing ecological education to the public; and participating in the drafting of environmental legislation in the Republic of Belarus.

The Ecological Association "SPHERE" is open for contacts and co-operation with all organisations pursuing human objectives through non-violence.

SPHERE's International Partners include: FME International and ISAR.
