BAJ is a newly formed public organization. Its objective is to strengthen the social, economic, and professional position of journalists as well as to give them legal assistance. The association cooperates with the Legal Service of the Mass Media Center.Recently, according to BAJ, the deputy chief of staff of the president of Belarus ordered state printing houses not to print, distribute, or deliver editions of Narodnaya Volya, Belaruskaya Delovaya Gazeta, and Imya (all independent newspapers). The association protested this action as repressive and dicriminatory, inasmuch as no such actions were taken against newspapers favorable to the administration.
BAJ seeks ties to international associations of journalists in order to exchange information and obtain support for its activities.
