Anne Kauzlarich, creator of the foundation, is wife of the American ambassador to Azerbaijan and highly regarded for her fluency in Azerbaijani. She was moved to create this foundation when she learned that the National Ballet did not have $5,000 needed for its corps of dancers in the next season. With the support of major figures in Azerbaijan's arts and business circles, Kauzlarich and Aliyeva formed AzMD. It has sent singers and pianists from Baku to the U.S., brought artists from Azerbaijan who work abroad back to Baku for performances, and plans a competition for scholarships for aspiring young artists throughout Azerbaijan.
