Mission:
- to share and celebrate Armenian Language and Culture
- educational and cultural services to refugees and
national minorities living in Armenia
- to promote cultural values through information exchange
- research, education and publishing activities
Background:
Ghevond Alishan is a non-governmental, non-profit organization
which was founded in 1991. It's membership is 25 people (primarily prominent
scientists, linguists, artists, qualified professors and
teachers). Ghevond Alishan has sub-committees on both Women's
issues (membership-16 women), and Youth issues (membership-6).
The association has branch offices in
Moscow, Kiev, and Paris.
Recognizing the important
role of the association, the Government of Armenia declared
it tax free by a special decision.
Programs:
- Ghevond Alishan Scientist-Women's Council.
- The Creation of a Psychological-cultural Adaptation Center for
Refugees
- "Getting familiar with Armenia"- group visits to
historical places
- "Not by Bread Alone" -publication of manuals, text-books,
dictionaries that are successfully used in language training
courses
- "Children are our future" -summer and winter camps for
refugee children
- "Refugee women and their problems" -social adaptation of
refugee women and the creation of data bank
- "Know Your Motherland" - a special psychological and cultural
adaptation program for refugees
Implemented Projects:
- Armenian Language and Culture annual summer training
courses
- A New method of teaching Armenian
- Let's speak Armenian 2 text-books (for beginners and
advanced learners) addressed to the Russian speaking
population of Armenia
- Russian-Armenian, Armenian-Russian Dictionaries, for
beginners and advanced learners
- Series of seminars and workshops for refugee promoting
and explaining the legal documents on election right and
the right to vote
- Multilingual Illustrated Dictionary ( through support from an outright
grant received from USAID/Save the Children)
- Summer camp for refugee children ( through support from a grant
from UN/NRC)

- Participation in the Management & Leadership Core

Goals:
- to protect women's rights
- to increase role of women in public, social, cultural and political life
- to join efforts with women around the world to maintain international
peace and security
- to provide advocacy and educational services for refugees and national
minorities
- research, education and publishing activities
Present projects
- Organized annual Armenian Language and Culture summer training courses
- Created a New method of teaching Armenian
- Publishes Let's speak Armenian - 2 text-books for refugees and national minorities
- Publishes Multilingual Illustrated Dictionary for refugee children
(supported by USAID)
- Runs Summer camp for refugee children (supported by UNHCR, NRC and local sponsors)
- Runs an education program for voters (supported by USIS)
- Teaches Armenian language training courses for refugee women and teachers from rural
areas (supported by UNICEF)
- Training for leaders of NGO's related to women's issues (jointly with Youth for Armenia,
supported by USIS)
- Publishes the brochure Warning for Women
(jointly with Religious Women Against Trafficing of Women, Netherlands)
- Drafting the Roster on Women Professions in Russia (supported by UNDP)
The Council is currently planning new projects including:
- An Educational Program for Municipalities
- Village Women in Civil Society
- Open house - Support and Information - Education center for Women Mobilization
- A biographical dictionary, Women in Science
- A conference, "The Role of Women's Organizations in Development of Democratic
Society"
The Council has participated in many important conferences including:
- World Conference WFMH Time for Reflection- Dublin, Ireland
- The Fourth World Conference on Women- Beijing, China
- The First European Women Synod- Gmunda, Austria
- The Second Annual Colloquy of the European Center for Modern Language- Graz, Austria
- The Second European Ecumenical Assembly- Graz, Austria
- European Conference of Trafficking of Women- Amersfort Netherlands
In December 1996 the Council created The Center for Development of Civil Society.
The Center's main goal is to promote ideas about democracy, civil
society, pluralism,
and diversity (cultural, religious, linguistic, and
political).
GEVOND ALISHAN ASSOCIATION IS LOOKING FORWARD TO
ESTABLISHING CONTACTS AND TO COLLABORATING BOTH WITH LOCAL
AND WITH INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS.
