Internews is an international nonprofit organization which works for an independent media in emerging
democracies. It has active projects in Russia, Ukraine, Central Asia, the Caucasus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and
Palestine. The Internews office in Moscow is a center of information and advice, providing both technical
assistance and moral support to about 200 local television stations located in seven newly independent states of
the former Soviet Union. Internews supports development of the independent media in the states of the former
Soviet Union through training, access to resources, coordination of media events, funding of independent media
projects, and other assistance to the media.
In one of its most successful projects, Internews organized a group of TV stations throughout the NIS into a news exchange network which jointly produces stories for a weekly news program. Since February 1993, this half-hour show, called Local Time, has aired every week. News pieces are submitted by station members of the news exchange network. The Russian staff compiles the reports into a 25-minute show and sends it back to the stations for broadcast. Internews estimates that Local Time is seen by about 60 million viewers in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan.
