Environmental Technical Information Project
http://ecologia.nier.org/
The Environmental Technical Information Project is an excellent example of how the Internet can be used to provide technical assistance to NIS NGOs. A project of ECOLOGIA, which has been working in the NIS since the mid-1980s, ETIP is a collection of links to Internet resources and on-line databases which contain technical information about environmental issues. It is divided into nine general categories:
- Toxic Substance Information
- Human Health Effects of Toxic Chemicals
- Waste Management and Pollution Prevention
- Environmental Legislation and Policy
- International Treaties and Global Issues
- Environmental Education
- Radiation Issues
- Energy-Related Technologies
- Miscellaneous Resources
For each subject category ECOLOGIA has prepared a brief profile of the on-line resources and databases it has found. It has also prepared an evaluation of each on-line resource which includes:
- a brief summary of the information contained in the on-line database
- an evaluation of the resource's strengths and weaknesses
- information about the sources of the data and how frequently is is updated.
Sometimes the evaluation also provides tips on how to navigate through the site and where to find good information.
As if ETIP was not user-friendly enough, ECOLOGIA has created three copies: one in English and two in Russian (using KOI-8 and Windows Cyrillic fonts).
