Requests for information about applying to U.S. schools are one of the most common queries CCSI receives from
people in the NIS (former USSR). In the past year a variety of good information resources have been uploaded to
the Internet which can help NIS students learn about the U.S. educational system and opportunities to attend our
colleges and universities.
The United States Information Agency (USIA) and the Soros Foundation sponsor Educational Advising Centers in the NIS which provide a number of functions, including: advising NIS students about study and research opportunities in the U.S.; providing information on financial aid; administering GRE, GMAT, TOEFL and other tests often necessary for admittance; and helping to recruit and select students for U.S.-based programs.

International Education Forum
Increasingly, information these centers provide is available on-line. One of the best places to find it is at a Gopher in Finland which hosts the International Education Forum. This Internet site includes information for and about NAFSA: Association of International Educators in the U.S., the European Association of International Educators, and the CEPES-UNESCO European Center for Higher Education in Europe.
One of the most useful sections of this Gopher is titled Overseas Educational Advisers� Resource Forum. Under this section there is a collection of files titled �Advising Quarterly� Field-of-Study Resource Guides which includes documents on:

Many times in the process of applying to U.S. universities, NIS students need to contact professors and department administrators to find specific information about a university department�s program. Unfortunately there is no standard reference source for this kind of contact information. Below are several different ways one can find e-mail addresses for faculty and staff at U.S. colleges and universities.
NAFSAnet is an on-line e-mail directory of many members of NAFSA: Association of International Educators. The on-line directory is intended to help facilitate communication between NAFSA members and should be used with discretion. It is divided by geographical regions. Some of the people listed have codes following their names which indicate membership in one of the sub-sections of NAFSA. At the top of each file is an index of the codes, but only acronyms are used. The NAFSA sub-sections of interest to NIS students are: ADSEC (University Admissions Section) and CAFSS (Council of Advisors to Foreign Students and Scholars).
College E-mail Addresses is a collection of files that can be used to find the e-mail address of students and teachers at North American colleges and universities. Many universities have a fairly standardized system for formatting e-mail address. For example, some schools use a person�s first initial and last name as an e-mail address. David Lamb, a professor of computer sciences at Queen�s University in Ontario who maintains this site, describes how e-mail addresses are formed at 455 schools. He also provides hints for the best way to find an e- mail address at each school. The list is divided into nine separate files, each of which is around 30 KB in size.
FAQ: How to find people's E-mail addresses. For adventurous souls this document contains a wide variety of techniques one can use to find someone�s e-mail address. Most of the techniques described are fairly technical and many are of limited value. However, if you need someone�s address desperately and you don't know where else to turn, this file is worth a try. 46 KB.
College and University Home Pages is a list of World Wide Web sites of nearly 2,500 universities around the world. Some universities have on-line directories of students and/or staff which can be accessed through the school�s home page. 142 KB.
CollegeNET Home Page. Includes, under �Graduate Programs,� the address, telephone, number of enrolled students, and tuition for hundreds of American law schools, medical schools, and MBA programs. Various files of different sizes.
U.S. Business Schools E-mail Addresses gives the e-mail address to use when requesting general information from any one of more than a hundred U.S. graduate schools of business administration. 15 KB.
