For non-profit organizations and new enterprises in the NIS, the Internet is a relatively inexpensive tool to make one's organization "visible" to the outside world. Creating a "home page" on the World Wide Web and uploading information about one's organization and services is very simple and the Internet's disregard for physical boundaries means that an NIS organization's home page doesn't even need to be located on a computer in the NIS--it could be situated anywhere. The explosion of the World Wide Web and the creation of powerful search mechanisms in the past six months means that an NIS organization can place its materials at the fingertips of tens of millions of people in the U.S. and Europe, and growing numbers in the NIS, without spending a ruble on printing or postage. One of the first and best examples of using this new World Wide Web technology in Russia is the St. Petersburg Home Page. ("Home Page" is the term used to refer to the first document one sees when visiting a World Wide Web site.)
The St. Petersburg Home Page was launched as part of the Goodwill Games held in St. Petersburg in the summer of 1993. Organizations on the home page include:
Most of the information is in English, which reflects the fact that, for the moment, most of the people who can view the Home Page live abroad.
