Full Internet in Belarus

Since the begininng of December, users of UNIBEL have had access to full Internet services. UNIBEL stands for "Network for Byelorussian Science and Education" and it joins Belarus's "most advanced universities, research institutes, and government and public ogranizations dealing with science and education." With the assistance of the Polish Academic and Research Network (NASK), a dedicated 9.6 Kbps line has been established between Minsk and Warsaw and an IP connection has been put into operation.

UNIBEL is supported by the Ministry of Education and Science of Belarus, the State Commitee of Science and Technology, and the Byelorussian Foundation for Fundamental Research. UNIBEL is involved in several projects to develop and improve the networking infrastructure in Belarus. These include, for example, efforts to foster electronic communications within and between high schools.

UNIBEL is a full national member of TERENA, EARN and CEENet. Additionaly UNIBEL has access to the Internet through the EUnet/Relcom network (Moscow) and UARNET (Lviw, Ukraine) via dial-up lines. A dedicated line to Moscow (FREEnet) is in the works, and a PTT licence has been obtained. In future a satellite station will be installed with assistance of Poland (NASK) and CEENet. This satellite connection will replace the dedicated line Minsk-Warsaw.
