If the place where the files you want to see or get is a Gopher site, you're in luck. In the case of Max's files at the Ohio Supercomputer Center, we knew--because he had told us--that we could "gopher" to them. So, at the initial Unix prompt, we typed:
Gopher does not prompt you for a Login or Password. Instead, from the "Root gopher server: infomeister.osc.edu" menu, we selected the following menus in succession (by pressing the Right arrow or Return keys)
If a menu choice is followed by a slash, this indicates it leads to another menu (or directory). If it is followed by a period, it is a fileyou are at the end of the line.
Use Gopher's search capabilities to look for specific information in the orgngou.txt file. Typing /Kiev, for example, will take you to the first instance of the word "Kiev." To find the next instance, press n. Because the entry for each organization in Max's file fills more than one screen, it may be difficult to know the organization to which your /Kiev search has led. Press b to scroll back and see the name of the organization you are looking at.
Gopher transfers files by mailing them. But you must view or open a file in order to mail it. Once you are in the file, scroll to the bottom, or simply type q anywhere. In either case a command bar at the bottom appears, as follows:
Type M and a dialog box will prompt you for the e-mail address to which to send the file. That's all there is to it! Type Q to terminate your Gopher session.
