Some Background on NEWW
Who we are:
The Network of East-West Women is a vital communications network linking
over 2,500 women's advocates in more than 40 countries in the Newly
Independent States (NIS) and Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). NEWW
members work together to further women's righ ts across the region.
They represent all strata of society -- they are writers, students,
journalists, parliamentarians, professors, lawyers, artists, union
organizers, and feminist activists.
Our principles:
NEWW's members have agreed to a set of common principles emphasizing the
importance of women's full participation in all aspects of public life;
their right to reproductive choice; and their rights to be free from
discrimination, violence, racial and ethnic hatred, and censorship.
Our goals:
NEWW's overarching goal is to support the formation of
independent women's movements across the post-Communist region. Our
primary objective is to increase the capability of women and women's
NGOs to intervene effectively on policy regarding women's lives.
NEWW coordinates projects, supports ad hoc committees, organizes
training workshops and conferences, provides consultations, and promotes
informational exchanges both East-East and East-West that reflect the
programmatic areas our members have identified.
Program areas of particular interest at the present time include:
- law & policy
- communication & media
- women's employment
- peace in the Balkans
- gender scholarship
- reproductive rights
- violence against women
- health & environment
Current projects include:
- NEWW On-Line, an electronic communications network that links women's
NGOs in the Newly Independent States, Central and Eastern Europe,
Western Europe and North America in an effort to maximize informational
exchange, develop technical and institutiona l building skills,
coordinate research and activist projects, influence policy decisions
and build a strong electronic community.
- The East-East Legal Coalition (EELC), a network of women's rights
advocates which examines and monitors the legal impact of the
post-communist transition on women's lives. Women's rights lawyers from
fourteen countries in the NIS and the CEE organized this legal reform,
advocacy, and outreach network in an effort to articulate and enforce
laws and policies that strengthen women's legislative status and sense
of citizenship in their respective countries. At present the EELC
includes members from over 2 0 countries.
- The On-Line Legal Resource Service (OLLRS) providing women's NGOs with
electronic, informational resources on a variety of topics pertinent to
rule of law in NIS and CEE, including feminist legal theory, media,
labor issues and violence against women. . * The NEWW OnLine Bulletin,
published both electronically and in hard copy, in English and Russian,
summarizes the information and discussions on NEWW's electronic
conferences and is distributed quarterly by OnLine participants and via
the Internet.
