CCSI's 1998 Projects
Civil Society in Central Asia
The Civil Society in Central Asia Project consists of two parts: the conference, and a book--half on presentations from the conference, and half a database of civil society organizations in Central Asia. Major support for the conference is being provided by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, and the Earhart Foundation of Michigan is supporting the book project.
- Conference. Scheduled for March 30-31, 1998 in Washington, DC. Organized together with the Central Asia Institute at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies.
- Book. Co-published with the University of Washington Press with an updated list of Central Asian NGOs and the analytical essays presented at the conference by US and Central Asian scholars.
Post-Soviet Handbook -- 2nd Edition
CCSI also has plans to produce a revised edition of the popular Post-Soviet Handbook together with the University of Washington Press. In order to help us with the revision and updating process, University of Washington graduate student Catriona Logan has just left for Russia, where she will spend the next three months as an intern at the Agency for Social Information, collecting data for the book. Substantial support for this work, which also doubles as thesis research for Catriona, is being provided by the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington.
To learn more about the first edition of the handbook, visit the The Post-Soviet Handbook page under our publications section.
Center for Civil Society International has no endowment and is not an arm of any institution: government, academic or corporate. We are truly independent... with all that this implies -- i.e., we can be forced to close our doors if we do not have sufficient public support. It is through the support of generous, internationally minded private individuals who have made it possible for us to expand our services in support civil society. Please consider giving a donation in support of CCSI services.
