As a Professor in International Affairs, specialized on North American issues I have made every effort among my students in the Universidad Central de Venezuela, to transmit them the strength and energy of civil society as it developed in the United States. To build the paradigm of a "good society" I strongly believe we have to start appreciating the value of civic associations and communitarian work, and for that I think the U.S. experience is extremely valuable.

I am very interested in the development of infastructure and health quality for peoples of the Ukraine. I have received alot of good information from CCSI. Keep up the good work. An organization such as this stands above the rest. Individuals make a difference and everyone does make a difference.

Excellent resources for generalists and specialists alike. Varied effects on the militaries of the Former Soviet Union during this period of transition to a free market economy. Best wishes, always, Terry JITC

This seems to be a good way how to find a pen-friend in English speaking countries. I am 14 and I am interested to exchange letters with a friend interested to music and nature. Leave your post-mail address on my E-mail, please. Martina

CCSI responds:
We also have a Pen Pal page in the "Special Resources" section of the website. It contains links to organizations that specialize in pen pal relationships in the NIS and around the world. Exchanges are available for individuals, students, classrooms and families.

What a wonderful message board! My interests in Russian women's health issues and HIV/AIDS prevention are renewed by your comments and insight. I'd love to hear from some people who share my enthusiasm for Russia and her people.

Sarah Busse [email protected] Tue Oct 22 00:39:28 EDT 1996

This is a wonderful site! I am a graduate student in sociology at the University of Chicago, with special interest (both professional and personal) in Russia and CIS. Native to Chicago, I have been to Russia once, in 1994. I lived and worked in Moscow & visited St. Petersburg.

My interests are in studying the effects of macro level social change on the lives of individuals. To that end, I hope to conduct my dissertation research in Russia beginning in late 1997.

If anyone has information on research on the growth of civil society, on research relating to value shifts, attitudinal change or or recent changes in life styles/behaviors in Russia, NIS or other post-Soviet societies (including Eastern Europe) I would appreciate learning about them. Thank you. Do vstrechi! Sarah Busse

I have been looking for a central information collection such as this for a long time. Finding it has made my day.

If anyone has information regarding U.S.-based NGO's assisting orphanages, children's hospitals, children's homes, etc. in the NIS, I would love to have names/addresses of these NGO's! I'm eagerly trying to contact organizations such as these!

CCSI responds:
Our "US-NIS Oriented Projects" section is designed for just this kind of request. The section presently it has a number of resources from which you could start your search. The "Health and Medicine" section includes a number of joint ventures between US and NIS organizations assisting hospitals and with various health issues. You might also try contacting the Women's organizations section as they often have their own programs for disadvantaged children.
