I'm intrigued by the relative absence of religious organizations from the list.
From my vantage point (in a sociology of religion program in a religious studies dept.), religious organizations do as much as (if not more than) any of the other groups listsed to promote civil society.
CCSI responds:
Thank you for this helpful and important observation. CCSI is presently developing a major addition to our WebSite which will consist of information on both indigenous religious organizations and international ones. (This section was uploaded February 1997. It is accessible by accessing the "Religion" section of any of the four sections: Electronic Resources, Print Resources, NIS Organizations, US-NIS Organizations.
This should be a useful resource for my students in post-communist transition. Will they find job/volunteer oportunities too?
CCSI responds:
Yes. The Announcements Page is designed to archive important time sensitive information such as volunteer and job opportunities. Many of these postings have fast-approaching deadlines. (Our new site upgrade added a "Job Search Resources" under the "Special Resources" section of the homepage. Great for recent graduates, or people with significant experience in Eurasia.)
I'm a town planner for a small town in Connecticut, and I am very interested in what the future holds for land use decision-making in the post-Communist CIS and Baltic states.
CCSI responds:
Although I don't know of any organizations that work specifically in the area of town planning in the NIS, there are a number of organizations which have projects in the general field of municipal government.
It is wonderfull you exist! I am the director of a former U.S organization, presently Romanian registered, working in civil society development.
Are your activities and information services restricted to former Soviet Union, or do you include the former central -est European countries ?
Dan Petrescu
CCSI responds:
We are currently compiling information in order to start a section dedicated to the development of Civil Society in Eastern Europe. While we are not actively seeking East European information to add to our website, we are adding the information that we run across on the listservs and sites we frequent.
