There are several ways to obtain addresses in the cities of the former Soviet Union.
The Who-is-Who Directory
Send the following message to [email protected] in order to get a list of those who have access to email in, for instance, Samarkand:
Of course, you can replace Samarkand with the name of whatever city interests you.
- ---- SELECT
#P Samarkand
---- ENDFor more information on the database and thorough instructions on how to use it, send an email message with the single word HELP at the first line to the same address as above.
The Intermap Database
A message in the following form to [email protected] will help you discover who uses email in Smolensk:
To get help, send a one line "HELP" email message to the same address.
- list a=smolensk end
quit
CDC Compilation
The Citizen's Democracy Corps has a (somewhat dated) list of 5,000 FSU email addresses. You can search this database on-line. The URL is gopher://solar.rtd.utk.edu/7waissrc:/etc/cdc
Lip's List
Benoit Carl Lips [email protected] has compiled a list of all the email providers in Eurasia. Look for the provider closest to the city of interest, then send the postmaster a letter asking about clients in your target city. The URL for the main menu is: www.best.be/InfoDesk/iap/:
FRIENDS Listserv
Alternatively, send a brief message containing your travel plans and assistance requests to the FRIENDS Listserv. FRIENDS is a "free service started by friends in Russia and the United States" and the Listserv is one element of that service. Hundreds of people in both the FSU and the USA read this list.First, subscribe to FRIENDS by sending a one line email "SUBSCRIBE FRIENDS firstname lastname" to [email protected] then, post your substantive message to [email protected].
FRIENDS also has a World Wide Web server. Use the following URL if you have a WWW browser: solar.rtd.utk.edu/friends/home.html If you don't have a WWW browser, just telnet to solar.rtd.utk.edu and enter 'friends' (in lower case and without the quotes) at the login prompt.
Good luck, Chris Kedzie, [email protected]
