Reporting Central Asia

Reporting Central Asia is a new, free weekly email service carrying up to four original and locally-written pieces. The stories form part of a two-year Central Asian Media Development Project conducted by the London-based Institute for War & Peace Reporting.

The aim of the project is to support the professionalisation of the local media and to increase the awareness of, and reporting on, human rights and related issues by journalists in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. IWPR recently opened offices in both Bishkek and Almaty and is operating this project, funded by the UK National Lottery Charities Board, in partnership with the Kazakstan International Bureau for Human Rights and Rule of Law (Almaty) and the Kyrgyz Bureau on Human Rights (Bishkek). It will include a range of other interlinked activities to support the local media, including educational and networking workshops, practical training projects and information dissemination, as well as local bulletins on media and human rights issues.

IWPR is an educational and development charity which supports independent media in regions in transition - the Balkans, the Caucasus and the Central Asian States. IWPR's website was recently judged by leading on-line editors as the UK's "Best On-line Journalism Service." It carries weekly reports from journalists and analysts in the regions providing unrivalled insight from contributors at the heart of these changing societies.
