Info-Russ was started by Alex Kaplan, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Johns Hopkins, to help the academic community of emigres from the former USSR adjust to their new environment and to communicate with each other. The list started with 40 of his friends and has since grown to over 1,000 subscribers. Messages to Info-Russ often consist of people seeking or providing information about job openings, visa and immigration requirements, etc. However, Info-Russ also carries important news items, especially in the field of human rights.
