North Caucasus NGO Monitor

Nonviolence International- Newly Independent States publishes "North Caucasus NGO Monitor" on a grant from the Open Society Institute in Budapest. This publication is intended to promote the development of civil society in the North Caucasus and to provide information on the activities of NGOs and activists in the area. Recent editions have included a wide variety of articles relating to the region's NGOs:

-In an effort to promote understanding between members of different faiths, the Chechen social-charitable fund "Berkat" has prepared a number of publications on cultural issues.

-A new human rights NGO, "Human Rights Defender" has been registered in Ingush and is currently focusing on searching for missing persons and restoring the rights of the deported.

-"Children's Fund," an NGO in North Ossetia in working on the creation of a fund to provide assistance in the case of emergencies involving children.

-The Centre for Peacemaking and Community Development has organized a number of ongoing projects in Chechnya, including the provision of psychological treatment for children suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, repairing Sernovodsk health spa as a rehabilitation center, and conducting seminars in conflict resolution and human rights for NGOs in the North Caucasus.

-The Dagestan NGO "Center for the Protection of Human Rights" has spent its first year coordinating legal assistance for those in need through the School of Law at Dagestan State University and they will soon begin publication of a newsletter focusing on raising awareness of legal rights.

-Local woman Hadijat Gataeva began in 1996 assisting children who had lost their parents in the war- today she has helped 98 children find homes, 27 of whom live with her.

-Leila Tsoroeva, an activist from Ingushetia, has been pressured by the police to prevent her from running in the local Parliament elections.
