Central and East European Management Development Association Listserv (CEEMAN-L)

CEEMAN-L is an internet discussion list sponsored by the Central and East European Management Development Association (CEEMAN), located in Slovenia. The list is managed by Dr. Dennis McConnell at the Maine Business School (USA). The CEEMAN-L list currently has 732 members in 46 countries. Most list members are represen- tatives of business schools and economics programs in the CEE/NIS regions (Baltics, Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Russian Federation).

The list includes many CEEMAN members, and members of both the Russian Association of Business Education (RABE) and the Central Asian Foundation for Management Development (CAMAN). The list also includes representatives from organizations such as the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX), the Soros Foundations, Peace Corps volunteers, and representatives from many other organizations involved in management education activi- ties in the CEE/NIS countries (AIESEC, ACCELS, ACTR, ACDI, CDC, CEP, CNFA, CIPE, IESC, IIE, NAFSA, UNDP, USAID, USIA, and VOCA).

The primary purpose of CEEMAN-L is to provide information to academics in CEE/NIS business schools/economic programs who have been isolated from information sources for many years. The list serves more as a bulletin board than as a traditional internet discussion list. The list is moderated (all messages to list mem- bers are first screened by the list manager) - a feature which protects the e-mail budgets of list members who must pay substan- tial fees to receive e-mail at some locations.

As list manager, my task is to monitor many electronic and print information sources, to learn of new publications and informa- tion resources, academic conferences, publishing and consulting opportunities, and funding programs for research and academic exchanges. Any information that would seem to be of interest to CEE/NIS members is posted to CEEMAN-L. Some of the information may be useful and/or interesting to list members in other re- gions. But the primary purpose is to serve the information needs of CEE/NIS members.

Faculty and administrators in business schools and economics pro- grams in the CEE/NIS regions, and individuals interested in the development of such programs, can be added to CEEMAN-L by sending a message directly to me [email protected]. Please provide your name, e-mail address, postal address, institutional affilia- tion, and academic/professional interests.

Since July 14, 1997 CEEMAN-L postings have been archived on a University of Geneva website. Archived postings can be viewed (and downloaded) by date, subject, author, or thread. The ar- chives will provide an overview of the nature of CEEMAN-L post- ings. Access the site http://ecolu-info.unige.ch/archives/ and, next to the "CEEMAN-L" entry, click on 1997 to view postings in 1997, and on 1998 to see postings to date in the current year.

NOTE: To receive a mailing list by country, contact Dennis McConnell [email protected]

MAIL, DIGEST, AND INDEX OPTIONS FOR RECEIVING CEEMAN-L MESSAGES

"Mail" Option - The Default
When you are first added to the mailing list, MAIL is the default option. With this option, you receive each complete message as it is posted.

"Digest" Option - One big message instead of a dozen little ones
In order to receive the DIGEST format, you must first be subscribed to the list and then change to the DIGEST option. With the DIGEST option you still receive all complete messages, but they arrive on your computer in one large message at the end of the day, rather than smaller, individual messages. So DIGEST saves you time, but does not reduce the Kilobyte size of the listserv.

To set your subscription to DIGEST:

Address e-mail to: [email protected]
Leave SUBJECT blank
In MESSAGE:
SET CEEMAN-L DIGEST

The listserver will provide a brief message acknowledging your request, and listing the current features of your subscription.

To change your subscription back to its original form (receiving each message as it is posted), simply follow the above instruc- tions (with the MESSAGE: SET CEEMAN-L MAIL).

"Index" Option - Receive a 'table of contents' of the messages for the day. Retrieve the messages you want
In order to receive the INDEX format, you must first be subscribed to the list and then change to the INDEX option. With the INDEX option, at the end of each day (midnight in Maine) you will receive a list of the TITLES of messages posted during the day. You can then select and retrieve only the messages you would like to receive.

To set your subscription to INDEX:

Address e-mail to: [email protected]
Leave SUBJECT blank
In MESSAGE:
SET CEEMAN-L INDEX

How to Use the INDEX Option on CEEMAN-L
List members who select the INDEX option will receive a daily message which includes the following information:

  1. An index number (the number to use when requesting the file)
  2. The date the message was posted to CEEMAN-L
  3. Size (number of lines) in the message
  4. The poster (Who posted the message - usually McConnell)
  5. The title (Subject) of the message
Here is a sample message:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
                    Sample INDEX Message
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Index Date Size Poster and subject
----- ---- ---- ------------------
000084 03/14 83 From: "Dennis McConnell, Maine Business School"

Subject: Call for Papers: Business/Economics Society
                     International
-----------------------------------------------------------------

The INDEX message will also provide instructions; however, they can be rather cryptic, so I have included more straight-forward instructions. For example, if you want to receive message #84, here is the procedure:

Address e-mail to: [email protected]
Leave SUBJECT blank
In MESSAGE:
GETPOST CEEMAN-L 84

The listserver will then send to you the complete message which was posted to CEEMAN-L on 3/14.

Searching the CEEMAN-L Archives

Messages posted to CEEMAN-L have been archived since February 27, 1997. You can SEARCH the CEEMAN-L archives using KEYWORDS of your choice. For example, if you want to see if any postings were related to Albania, you may do the following:

Address e-mail to: [email protected]
Leave SUBJECT blank
In MESSAGE:
SEARCH CEEMAN-L ALBANIA

The listserver will send you a list of messages in which the word "Albania" appeared. In that message, you will find an index number (Item #). For example, you will see that Item #76 was a posting entitled "Albanian News on the Internet." You can retrieve that complete posting by following the instructions above for retrieving indexed messages (In the instructions, substitute message #84 for the Item # that was returned from the search). The listserver will then send the complete Albania message to your e-mail address.
