Posted at CCSI's online "Organization Guestbook" April 10, 1998 The Public Environmental Center for Sustainable Development is conducting the first and only system of sustainability indicators in Bulgaria. The project was a cooperative effort by local scientists, municipal representatives and local business. A working group identified crucial indicators in five categories: Environment, Economic, Culture, Education and Social. Public hearings were held to allow the citizens to participate in the selection of the final indicators. Once the indicators were selected, intensive research was done on each indicator to see whether it was moving towards or away from sustainability. The findings were published in a booklet and widely distributed throughout the city.
This year the project is studying the same indicators in order to see how they move over time. Our goal is to train other communities how to establish an indicators system in their area. We can then network the individual systems and develop a national system of indicators.
