CCSI Completes 4th Successful Year
1996 was the most successful year ever for Center for Civil Society International. In just our fourth year
of operation, we:
Published the 400-page Post-Soviet Handbook (see box below) together
with the highly respected University of Washington Press. The book received very good reviews and
had sold more than 1,200 copies by year end.
Formed a fruitful partnership with the Agency for Social Information, based in Moscow. ASI is the
premier clearinghouse and source of information on third sector developments in Russia.
Received a three-star Magellan award for our acclaimed bi-lingual Web site.
Conducted Internet training seminars in Poland and Ukraine on behalf of the National Council on
Economic Education, under a contract from the U.S. Department of Education.
Published a 50-page booklet, Internet Dlya Zhurnalistov (The Internet for Journalists), for a
conference at Far Eastern State University in Vladivostok, sponsored by Vladivostok News, the Tacoma
News Tribune and the Art Pattison Communications Exchange Project. The booklet sold out and went into a
second printing in Moscow.
Published a book in Polish on the role of independent associations and voluntary organizations in the
U.S. Working with Warsaws Regardless of the Bad Weather Foundation, which had received a grant
from the German Marshall Fund, we produced 'Jeszcze Raz O
Demokracji w Ameryce' ("One More Time, About Democracy in America").
This useful manual was distributed to 1,500 NGOs in Poland during the fall.
All this the work of a little nonprofit organization based in Seattle? It doesnt seem possible. With
only 3 paid staff and a handful of skilled volunteers, we manage to give the impression that we are
larger and better heeled than we are. Its a bit of magic. But fueled by our belief in the importance of
independent, vigorous, grasroots organizations, we do a lot with every dollar we receive. If you share our
belief in the values of civil society worldwide, please consider making a donation to our work in 1997.
CCSI depends on your support for all that we do!
