Spravochnik Nekommercheskikh Organizatsij--Samarskaya Oblast
(Directory of Voluntary Organizations--Samara Oblast)

According to Samara oblast authorities, there were almost 1,000 registered non-governmental organizations in the region in mid-1996. This directory, published this fall by the British organization, BEARR Trust, focuses on those organizations which are “mainly concerned with the welfare of others...grassroots groups working in social welfare, health, culture, education and the environment...”

The directory is bi-lingual throughout (English and Russian) and describes approximately 75 organizations in some detail—from the Association for Large Families to the Volga Cossacks Assembly Society. It was produced with a grant from the British Know How Fund (see page 3). Serge Oumow of the BEARR Trust worked with Yulia Utochkina and Bella Nikitina of the “Historical-Ecological-Cultural Association Povolzhe” in Samara to carry out the project.
