Channels

Channels: A Guide to Third Sector Projects, Organizations and Work Opportunities in the New Independent States (Center for Civil Society International, September 1995, 199 pp.) is a thoroughly revised and expanded version of this popular resource, previously published in 1993. This edition, like the earlier one, contains a section describing the work of 80 private voluntary organizations (PVOs) which are based in the U.S. and are carrying on a wide range of creative, institution-building projects in the NIS (new independent states of the former Soviet Union). Among these organizations are the American International Health Alliance, Citizen Exchange Council, Earth Island Institute's Baikal Watch, Financial Services Volunteer Corps, and Network of East-West Women.

A totally new element of the 1995 edition of Channels is a major section--over 90 pages in length--profiling independent third sector (non-commercial, non-governmental) organizations in the NIS. Contact information is provided for hundreds of organizations, such as the International Institute of Women and Management in St. Petersburg (Russia); a native people's association in Khabarovsk (in the Russian Far East); the Kyrgyz-American Bureau on Human Rights and Rule of Law in Bishkek; the Special Olympics office in Yerevan, Armenia; and the International Media Center in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Channels also provides contact information for various U.S. official agencies (USAID, USIA, Peace Corps, etc.) supporting projects in the NIS that are focused on developing independent associations and other institutional reforms central to a healthy civil society.

Individuals interested in purchasing single copies should send checks made out to "CCSI" for $20 for Channels. (This price includes first class postage for U.S. customers only)
