The first Russian-American Breast Cancer Conference open to physicians throughout the world will be be held in Saratov, Russia, June 7-9, 1995. United States sponsors include the Department of State, the National Cancer Institute, the National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations, and the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Sponsors in Russia include the Russian Minsitry of Health, the National Oncology Center in Moscow, and Saratov Medical University.

The conference aims to share advances in breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and prevention, promote international sharing of knowledge and enable new clinical relationships. This meeting will end half a century of seclusion for most doctors in the Soviet Union from Western scientific and medical development. Leading breast cancer experts from the United States will speak.

Co-Chairs of the Conference are Barrie R. Cassileth, Ph.D., Adjunct Professor of Medicine (Oncology) at the University of North Carolina and Consulting Professor of Community and Family Medicine at Duke Unviersity, who initiated and is principal organizer of the conference, Academician Trapesnikov and V. F. Kirichuk, Rector of Saratov Medical University.

Dr. Cassileth, internationally known for her work in psychosocial medicine, developed the idea for the conference while in Saratov to speak at the Medical Center in late 1993. She has since worked to organize and fund the conference with Drs. V.V. Vlassov and Josef Gorfinkel, professors and department chairs at Saratov Medical Institute. She was especially aware of the pressing need for current knowledge, technology and communication in breast cancer which, like all medicine in Russia outside Moscow, lags behind world-wide standards.

Saratov is a city of one million people on the Volga River, 450 miles Southeast of Moscow. Formerly a major center of military manufacturing, only recently has its large medical community gained access to Western medical specialists and literature. Saratov Medical University, one of the first in Russia, was established in 1909. It has 5,000 medical students and a medical faculty of more than 800 professors in 79 departments and laboratories. Its five teaching hospitals have a combined total of 2,400 beds. It is one of the largest and highest- rated medical centers in Russia.
