Knowledge of modern management accounting is critically lacking in most of the transition economies of the former USSR. This newsletter one year ago announced an important teaching resource under preparation by DidaktEkon AB, a Swedish firm started in 1992 by university professors of finance and accounting.

Since then, all the course materials have been produced, both in Russian and in Swedish. (An English translation is currently being prepared.) The course material is primarily designed for self-study and distance education, and DidaktEkon states that it can arrange supervision by teachers who will answer questions by fax, telex, or e-mail.

But the course material is also suitable for use by schools of business administration in the new independent states or by firms in the NIS wishing to retrain their management. In a collaboration between Uppsala University and the St. Peterburg University of Economics and Finance, Russian teachers have been trained in Sweden and Swedish teachers have offered the course in Russia to university students and to officers leaving the Russian armed forces. Swedish government funds have covered all costs so far. The 3 major course segments are:

Each segment takes between 50 and 80 hours to complete and includes:

The cost of the entire package is 4,000 Swedish kroner (about US$540) and discounts are available for volume orders. Individual segments can also be purchased. Segment 1 alone, for example, costs 1,800 kroner (about US$245).
