Volunteer opportunities near North Lake Baikal
Severobaikalsk (pop. 30,000) is at the northern end of Lake Baikal and on the Baikal-Amur railway. The city is soliciting help from abroad in two areas: teaching and tourism. The jobs offer no pay, but accomodations are free, and living costs would be low. Russian language ability is helpful, but not essential.
- Teaching English at a primary or secondary school. The school year starts September 1 and finishes in May. There are winter holidays. Min. commitment: 6 months. ESL/TEFL training a plus.
- Developing a regional tourist center for north Lake Baikal, a tourism plan, and a guidebook to the region. This work will be supported directly by the region's government. It could involve two people. Experience in tourism planning and tourist center operations a plus. Qualities required for producing the regional guidebook include self-motivation, curiosity, and fitness.
