The National Institute of Justice is the research and development agency of the Department of Justice. The U.S. Congress has mandated that NIJ "serve as a national and international clearinghouse for the exchange of information" in the criminal justice area. To accomplish this, the NIJ created in 1972 the National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS). NCJRS is the largest criminal justice network in the world, receiving over 3,500 requests a month, many from outside the U.S.

These are some of the programs that NCJRS offers:

The International Document Exchange Program (IDEP)
IDEP has nearly 100 members in more than 40 countries. Members exchange information and research with NCJRS continually; they are also a source for information about NCJRS in their own country. As of this writing, there were 5 IDEP members in Hungar y, 2 in Poland, 2 in Ukraine, and 1 each in Belarus and Russia.

NIJ Conference Calendar and the Juvenile Justice Conference Calendar
Lists over 100 national, international and regional events of interest to criminal justice professionals, researchers and policy makers. Organizations sponsoring conferences can place free announcements in either of these Conference Calendars by send ing a brochure or other information on the event. Bi-monthly calendar printouts are available on a one-time basis or as an annual subscription. The cost of the latter to international subscribers is $43.00.

The NCJRS Electronic Bulletin Board
Available 24 hours a day, it allows users to communicate instantly with each other or with agencies of the Office of Justice Programs. Some of the most valuable uses of the bulletin board derive from the online exchange of ideas, comments, question-a nd-answers, or participation in surveys. To access the Bulletin Board, set your modem to 8-bit, 1-stop, no parity. Dial (301) 738-8895. At the first prompt, type: NCJRS. For help, call (301) 251-5049.
Crime File
A high-quality library of videotapes for training, educational or community use. For international users these tapes can stimulate discussions comparing criminal justice policies and inititiatives in the U.S. with the experiences of other countries. Crime File videotapes are available in VHS, Beta, and 3/4-inch formats. A detailed brochure listing Crime File titles, costs and ordering information is available on request.
Other services, including a database and microfiche library containing over 120,000 documents-more than 22,000 are from international sources-are described in a publication titled NCJRS International Overview and Guide. Additionally, NCJRS has recently e stablished an experimental Gopher site on the Internet which will soon offer other services and resources.
