From Armenia to Uzbekistan, from the Baltic to the Black Sea--the Events that Missed the Evening News

Except when crises erupt, such as the storming of the Parliament in October, the American media tend not to offer much news on a daily basis from the ex-Soviet Union. For those already connected to the Internet or one of the other computer-based information networks, there are a number of ways to obtain more news about the region daily.

One of these is the RFE/RL Daily Report, which is sent free to anybody that subscribes to the service. (Unless Congress slashes the budget of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty too deeply for even this useful service to be continued.)

The Daily Report averages about 30-32 thousand bytes of data--the equivalent of about 16 pages of text--and covers both the former Soviet area and Eastern Europe. It arrives on your computer daily by 9 a.m. EST, and can be saved, deleted or printed after being read.

To subscribe to the RFE/RL Daily Report, send an e-mail message to:

If your e-mail software prompts you to name a subject (i.e., with the prompt SUBJECT>), skip past the subject prompt to the area for your message. There type:
SUBSCRIBE RFERL-L your-first-name your-last-name
This message will be read by a "listserver" device on the computer in Buffalo which will automatically take the return address of the message sender and add it to the "mailing list." If the request was successful, the sender will receive a confirmation notice and the first Daily Report the next day.

To cancel the service at any time, send an e-mail message to the same address:

At the Message prompt, simply type:
