The goal of the ASIC is to assist groups in Central Asia in bringing about reform of land and water use in the Amu Darya and Syr Darya river basins, damaged severely by USSR irrigation policies of the past 30 years. These ancient rivers have fed the Aral Sea and supported life in this vast area for millenia.
Making the Aral Sea region productive again is a daunting task. 35 million people inhabit the region of the two river basins. Those who live along the lower reaches of the rivers, or on the former shoreline of the receding Sea, have seen their water supplies destroyed or polluted, and their health problems are severe. The Aral Sea today is only 25% of its volume in 1960. The dry seabed today is a toxic mix of chemicals and salt. All of the Sea�s 24 species of fish have died off.
