The United States Information Agency (USIA) has recently launched a $1.1 million "Business for Russia" program to bring Russian entrepreneurs to the U.S. for 4-week business internships. Initially, 270 Russian entrepreneurs and 30 local government and media representatives will be chosen to come to the U.S. in the spring of 1994. USIA anticipates it will receive additional funding this fiscal year to expand the program.
The 300 Russian participants will be selected from four major geographic regions: Moscow, St. Petersburg, the Volga region, and the Russian Far East. Entrepreneurs will be selected jointly by U.S. and Russian partners through fair and open competition. They will be screened based on their previous entrepreneurial experience and English language skills. Government and media representatives will be included to provide local support for the entrepreneurs upon their return to Russia.
Local and national U.S. nonprofit organizations have been asked by USIA to submit proposals for placing interns in host businesses and providing homestays.
