The Commerce Department's Special American Business Internship Training Program (SABIT) offers 3-6 month internships with U.S. firms for senior level NIS managers and scientists who speak good English. Established in 199, by August 1996 SABIT has trained over 900 NIS managers and scientists. The goal of the program is to expose managers and scientists "to a whole new way of thinking in which demand, consumer satisfaction, and the ‘bottom line’ drive production."
Through a competitive application process, U.S. firms are selected to host interns and are provided with grants up to $7,500 for transportation and a daily stipend. Firms may designate the interns they wish to train or ask the Commerce Department to match them with NIS managers and scientists who have filled out questionnaires and been screened by SABIT's NIS representative. SABIT considers all applications, but it focuses on 10 priority sectors:
Interns may be from any of the NIS countries except Azerbaijan, Estonia, Latvia, or Lithuania.
