In March 1992 Magee-Womens Hospital, the University of Pittsburgh's obstetrics and gynecology teaching hospital, and Savior's Hospital for Peace and Charity in Moscow initiated a project to improve prenatal, obstetric, and infant care and education. The project includes: opening a Womancare Education Center in July 1993 that provides educational resources for women and health educators; establishing a Birth House, scheduled to open in March 1994 and jointly administered and staffed by Magee and Savior's hospitals, that will serve as a prenatal care birthing center and teaching clinic for nurses and physicians; and developing a statistical database to track pregnancy outcomes. A key component of the project will be a community education program that seeks to reach Russian women in rural areas. The project is supported by private contributions and a $450,000 grant from USAID and is one of the partnerships sponsored by the American International Health Alliance.
