LML is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization founded in April 1990 to provide medicine, medical supplies, and equipment to hospitals throughout Lithuania. It has shipped 51 containers of supplies worth more than $30 million. 90% of the supplies are directed to specific hospitals following on-site visits by LML volunteers. According to Lithuania's Minister of Health, LML is responsible for 50% of all medical aid that comes to Lithuania from the U.S.

In cooperation with the Ministry of Health of Lithuania, LML coordinates sister-hospital and university medical school exchange programs in the Chicago area. Working with the University of Illinois at Chicago, LML has helped establish a regional perinatal and neo-natal program in Lithuania. University of Illinois physicians and nurses have conducted a series of lectures on infant resuscitation and ventilation in Vilnius and Kaunas and the university has hosted visits by Lithuanian physicians. The Ministry of Health has also asked LML to recruit medical personnel from all fields to volunteer their services in Lithuania for 2-3 months.

LML also works in cooperation with Computer Lift, Dental Assistance Foundation to Lithuania (DAFL), and the Lithuanian American Pharmacists Association. Computer Lift has helped facilitate the donation of an IBM mainframe, associated work stations, and other computer equipment to hospitals in Vilnius and Kaunas. DAFL is in the process of establishing a �model� dental clinic in Kaunas. The clinic, equipped by donations from Loyola University of Chicago and others, will be staffed by at least one American dentist and will serve as a teaching facility of Western dental techniques.
