Grassroots organizations concerned about the environment and historical preservation were among the first wave of neformaly that "sprouted like mushrooms after rain" in the late 1980s in the USSR. In the October 1992 issue of its newsletter, Historic Preservation News, the National Trust for Historic Preservation published a concise guide to over 40 U.S. undergraduate or graduate degree programs in historic preservation, plus a list of 20 preservation crafts and trades training programs.
