1997
Annual Report

Civil Society International had major achievements
in 1997 ...

- we expanded our Web site significantly, so that it was receiving more than
56,000 monthly page views by the end of the year;
- we continued to develop our free electronic mailing list, CivilSoc, which has
more than 1,200 subscribers around the world;
- we assisted the National Council on Economic Education with the Internet
component of a large multi-year project in Ukraine, focused on the training of
secondary and college-level educators;
- we co-managed the fourth, and most successful ever, New Media for a New
World conference in Ekaterinburg, Russia;
- we launched a new initiative aimed at Central Asia;
- we developed new publications, including
Internet Resources for Economic Educators;
- and, not least important, we took important steps to strengthen our long-term
financial base.
We were able to carry out this high level of activity thanks to strong staff work,
great volunteer help, and our highest-ever levels of fundingin excess of
$200,000. Our core financial support came from generous individuals in Seattle
and around the country who share our vision. Our project funding came from
creative philanthropic institutions such as the Eurasia Foundation, Carnegie
Corporation of New York and the Earhart Foundation.
